What should I do if I see a small fire burning in an office trash can?

  • If you are at a customer site, follow their procedures.
  • If you are at a Sokudo office, first, alert your co-workers.
    • If you have been trained in how to use a fire extinguisher and you feel the fire can be easily put out, use the appropriate fire extinguisher for the type of fire.
    • If you do not know how to use a fire extinguisher or if you feel the fire is more than you can safely handle, set of the building fire alarm, call 911 and evacuate the building.

If I spill a small amount of low-hazard chemical, such as copier toner or white-out, what steps should I take?

  • If you are at a customer site, follow their procedures.
  • If you are at a Sokudo office, put on gloves to protect your hands. Use rags or paper towels to clean up the spill. Advise your supervisor and ask how to dispose of the rags or towels used to clean the spill.
    • If you do not feel comfortable with cleaning up the spill or you are not sure the hazard level of the chemical, do not attempt to clean the spill. Check with your supervisor for instructions.

I received a small paper cut on my finger. Do I need to report this as a safety incident?

  • All safety incidents, including small injuries, non-injuries, and near-misses must be reported. No exceptions.
    • If you are at a customer site, follow their procedures.
    • If you are at a Sokudo office, report the incident to your supervisor immediately.
    • You and your supervisor will determine if first aid or medical attention is required.
    • Your supervisor will submit the online Incident Investigation form on the DSNeWeb Safety page.

I found a small plastic bottle with some sort of liquid in it. There is no label or markings on the bottle, or the label is not in English. What should I do?

  • Contact your supervisor immediately! All containers must be marked with the chemical information. Contact the Safety Manager to determine how this chemical container should be handled.

I need to work with a chemical that puts off strong fumes. There is a respirator in a cabinet in our work area. Can I go ahead and work with this chemical while wearing this respirator?

  • No!! Before using any respirator device, you must:
    • Complete a medical evaluation and be approved by a physician to use a respirator.
    • Be properly fitted for a respirator and be trained in its use, cleaning, and storage.
    • Know the specific properties of the chemical in order to select the right type of respirator and filter.
      • This may require the services of a professional industrial hygienist.
  • Respirator use is the last resort in protecting against chemical fumes.
    • First, engineering controls such as ventilation must be considered.
    • Next, administrative controls such as procedures or special tools, must  be considered.
